The 2019 Oakhurst Community Garage Sale was a Huge Success. The 2020 Garage Sale is poised to be even Bigger and Better than ever. The Oakhurst Garage Sale has become so large that we are no longer able to count participating homes. We offer homeowners the choice of having their home identified on our map. But typically, less than half take advantage of this. But consider this. In 2012, the last time we took a physical count of participating families, the count showed that we had well over 200 individual garage sales for the fourth year in a row. But even that count was only a snapshot in time and surely missed those who opened early, sold out, and closed their garage doors before we drove past their home or those who opened late, after we passed. Actually, because of the huge amount of shoppers that we get, it's really rather common in parts of Oakhurst, for people to sell out early. So the actual number of participating homes was probably even higher. In any event, that means that our annual average is roughly 1 in every 5 homes in Oakhurst participates. As in prior years, we expect thousands of shoppers. But Sheriff Deputies have always managed to keep the traffic flowing smoothly. In prior years, we have had shoppers from as far away as Galveston, Richmond, Huntsville, Katy, Livingston, Waller and Victoria. In 2012, more than 60% of shoppers that were polled, were return shoppers - some had been to every one of our garage sales. In fact, to give you an idea of how popular the Oakhurst Community-Wide Garage Sale has become, we've stopped advertising everywhere except this site! That right. We now have all the automobile traffic that we can handle. So if you plan to attend, mark your calendars now, for the 2nd Saturday in October, because you won't see advertisements all over the Internet in the weeks leading up to the garage sale, as in previous years. This isn't to suggest that we want it to get smaller. It just means that both homeowners and shoppers are now quite content with the Oakhurst Garage Sale being the largest community garage sale in Houston, without it getting any larger. After all, with the current traffic load, Sheriff's Deputies are able to avoid traffic jams... but just barely. Over the years, we've had reports of numerous other community garage sales - some more than 50 miles away - having to change the date of their sale, because this event had so seriously reduced the number of shoppers they were getting. But beyond that, every year we hear of even more such changes. This is another reason why we expect attendance to continue to grow, even without advertising. With less competition on this weekend, more people will find us. As usual, Sheriff Deputies will be on hand to handle traffic issues and for security. In fact, thanks to the Deputies, garage sale traffic issues have been mostly minor and quickly dealt with. Don't miss the next edition of the largest garage sale in the Greater Houston area. Mark your calendar now, for Saturday, October 10, 2020 at 7:00 AM. |
We Had Sales and Crowds Everywhere!
The following images were taken after 9:00AM, after the Oakhurst Garage Sale had been underway for more than two hours. On a typical, Saturday, these roads would have almost no traffic and you would only rarely see a car parked on the street.

Tips for Shoppers:
Oakhurst has well over 1000 occupied homes and a significant part of those homes are expected to participate in this years's garage sale. But be aware that Oakhurst wraps around an 18-hole golf course, so you could miss some great shopping, if you aren't prepared. In fact, some of the best deals are found at the newest homes and the new sections are deep inside Oakhurst. Here are some tips, to help insure that you will make the most of your shopping.
• | Click on the map on the right side of this page, the night before the sale. That will open a ready-to-print, full color map, in PDF format. Download and print that map. Then use it to plan your route. There will be gray scale maps maps supplied at the Northpark entrance to Oakhurst in the early hours of the sale. Please note that the map is constantly being updated and will not be complete till after noon on the Friday before the garage sale. So if you download the map sooner, it may not show all of the registered homes. FYI, less than half of participants typically register to be on the map, so also plan to look for balloons. |
• | Veteran Oakhurst Garage Sale shoppers know that the best deals are found where the newest homes are to be found. That's deeper inside Oakhurst. Owners of those newer homes have not been here long enough to participate in more than one or two past garage sales, if any, and they probably still have lots of great deals on items that just don't fit in the new house. That's not to say that areas in the front of Oakhurst don't have good deals too. They do. Just keep in mind that many of the homeowners, who live near the front of Oakhurst, have participated in as many as 11 previous garage sales. Some of those great deals may be gone. Also, there is less traffic as you venture deeper into Oakhurst, which means that you can make better use of your time. |
• | Speaking of time, make the most of your time by using the map to avoid congestion. Rather than turn down a congested street and waste time in traffic, use the map to find a less congested area and come back to that street later. There will probably be over 200 garage sales in Oakhurst. Why sit is traffic, on an already shopped street, when you could be shopping in a less congested and less shopped area? In general, areas deeper into Oakhurst tend to have less early morning traffic. Seek out less congested areas and spend your time shopping in areas that have not been heavily shopped, instead of sitting in traffic on streets that have already seen thousands of shoppers. |
• | Follow the signs to more garage sales. In addition to the maps, we'll have many directional signs around Oakhurst, pointing to areas deeper in Oakhurst, where you'll find just as many garage sales, but less congestion. In fact, as mentioned above, the newest homes in Oakhurst are deep into the subdivision and they are the ones that have not participated in past garage sales. |
• | Look for the balloons. Residents have been instructed to use balloons, to draw attention to their garage sale. So look down each street for balloons. |
Every section of Oakhurst will be having multiple garage sales, yet only a few areas will see any serious traffic congestion. Don't miss any of the sales, by being stuck in traffic. The maps are the key. Use them to your advantage.
About the Oakhurst @ Kingwood Community Garage Sale
We think so. Here's why.
To begin with, this is not a flea market type sale, where people bring the few items that will fit into the trunk of their car, to some parking lot. This is more than 200 individual real garage sales, all in one area, where sellers aren't limited to only what will fit in the car. This is the real thing.
If a picture speaks a thousand words, then ours speaks volumes. Although we provide a map of participating homes, being listed on the map is optional and many homeowners don't take the time to register. But you can tell from the thumbnail (on the right side of this page) of the Preliminary Map of Participating homes, just what kind of homeowner participation we have.
Here are just a few of the statistics from past Oakhurst Community Garage Sales, when we were still trying to keep count.
• | In 2008 we had over 140 participating homes. |
• | Every year since 2009 we had over 200 participating homes. |
• | One in every 8 Oakhurst homes participated in 2008. |
• | One in every 5 Oakhurst homes participated every years since 2009. |
• | In 2008, Sheriff Deputies estimated that we had over 1,000 out-of-Oakhurst vehicles. |
• | In 2009, Sheriff Deputies estimated that we had 2500 to 3000 out-of-Oakhurst vehicles. |
• | In 2010, Sheriff Deputies estimated that we had over 3000 out-of-Oakhurst vehicles, with most carrying 3 to 4 adults, meaning that, for the first time, we had more than 10,000 shoppers! That trend has continued. |
In short, the Oakhurst @ Kingwood Community Garage Sale has great resident participation, which has led to huge popularity among garage sale shoppers.
In fact, this community garage sale is so large that two Houston television stations and the Houston Chronicle have covered it in the past.
Just a few of the things that people have sold in our past garage sales range from small items like baby clothes, toys and Clinique samples, to large items like kitchen appliances, washers and dryers, furniture, lawn mowers and exercise equipment. But that's just a tiny sample. With more than 200 participating homes every year, our shoppers have found all kinds of bargains.
Count on it, you'll find just about anything that you're looking for at the Annual Oakhurst @ Kingwood Community Garage Sale.
In the past, we've had shoppers who told us that they had come from as far away as Katy, Sugarland, Baytown, Galveston, Angleton, League City, Richmond, Huntsville, Victoria, and Waller.
You can literally shop more garage sales in one morning than you are likely to shop in all of Houston for the rest of the year.
So you tell us. Have you ever seen a community-wide garage sale even remotely as huge as this, anywhere in the Houston area? Have you ever seen it anywhere?
You have to see it to believe it.
Mark your calendars now, for
Saturday,
October 12, 2019!
MAPS
We strongly suggest that shoppers download and print our ready-to-print (PDF) map of Oakhurst, from our web site. After all, it will take planning to cover more than 200 expected garage sales in one morning.
Shoppers are reminded that Oakhurst wraps around an 18 hole golf course and unless you have a map or know the area, you could easily miss a section with lots of homes and sales. That's why we encourage shoppers to print out the online map, before coming. We expect about 1 in every 5 homes in Oakhurst to participate in each annual garage sale.
You don't want to miss a one.
Important Message for Homeowners:
NO PRIVATE SIGNS ARE ALLOWED.
By deed restriction, residents are not allowed to place private signs out. Instead, the community association recommends that you tie balloons to your trees or mail box.
The community association will provide framed custom signs at the main entrances to Oakhurst and numerous custom signs throughout Oakhurst, to make certain that shoppers can find their way to each of the various areas of Oakhurst.
Security:
Each year, the community association has a number of off-duty deputies on hand for the garage sale, both for security and to deal with traffic issues. They will be in Oakhurst an hour or two before sunrise. Also, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department will be making additional patrols through Oakhurst, during the garage sale. With their able help, each of our past community garage sales have gone off without a hitch.
Resident Registration:
We have decided to discontinue mandatory resident registration for the garage sale. In the beginning, this helped us build the maps, which were key to drawing more shoppers. People tended to think that it was marketing hype, when we said that there would be more than 200 homes participating. The map was the tool that justified number.
But after many very successful garage sales, where we consistently had more than 10,000 shoppers a year; most of them being repeat shoppers, we decided that the maps were no longer a necessary marketing tool and generating a map of an increasing number of participating homes had become a daunting task. We still provide the maps, for shopper convenience.
However, there is no need for residents to register for the garage sale. If you want your home to be identified on our map, then sign up. But it's not mandatory. In either case, tie balloons to your mailbox, trees or a stake in the ground.
About Oakhurst @ Kingwood:
The Oakhurst @ Kingwood Golf Course Community is the newest part of Kingwood, with homes ranging from the $170s to $1 million. Oakhurst is located just northwest of the intersection of US59 and North Park Drive, with entrances both on the US59 southbound access road and on North Park Drive, 0.3 mile west of US59. Note that this is the only part of Kingwood that is west of US59.
Many of the 1000-plus occupied homes in Oakhurst are less than 10 years old. That means that a lot of homeowners have a lot of items from previous homes that don't go with their new home and that they now want to sell. Also, since most new homes come with appliances, many homeowners will have appliances to sell, from their past home.
The Oakhurst Community-Wide Garage Sale is truly an event that you don't want to miss and it comes only once a year. So mark your calendar now.
